FAQs

What is the residential accommodation like?

Your bedroom will either be in the College Blocks A-G (see College map) or in St Peter’s terrace, which is just a couple of minutes walk thorough the grounds to the other side of the Fitzwilliam Museum. The rooms are very comfortable, and rather larger than most student accommodation; some even have a separate sitting room. Towels are provided, together with tea- and coffee-making facilities. Bathrooms and kitchens are shared with just a few other students; the accommodation is not en suite, but please ask to be near a loo if this is a problem. Some rooms have two beds, so please let us know if you would like to share with a friend or bring a partner. (NB: the residential cost is £100 per person, not per room.)

Where can I get an evening meal on Friday and Saturday?

There are a number of places to eat within 5 minutes walk of the college, including a fish restaurant immediately opposite the college and Brown’s, a couple of doors along (though this does get busy at the weekend, so service can be rather slow). As you walk down Little St Marys to wards the river, there are two pubs which serve good food, and an Indian restaurant and a noodle bar in a courtyard just off the road. As Peterhouse is so close to the town centre, if you go in this direction (see Cambridge map) you will find many other options – students have told me about a good Greek and a vegetarian restaurant. There are also cooking facilities including microwaves in the college.

There are some foods I can’t eat/am allergic to – is this a problem?

If you let us know, Peterhouse is very helpful in taking students’ dietary needs into account; for example, making sure that soya milk is available. There is plenty of choice at breakfast, and lunches are buffet-style, so you will not go hungry!

I won’t reach Cambridge in time for Registration and the first teaching session. If I arrive late, what should I do?

If you have a residential place, the porter will give you a key when you arrive; the Porters’ Lodge is open 24 hours a day, and they are very helpful. You can be registered at the start of the first teaching session.

I am flying from abroad. How do I reach Cambridge?

The nearest airport is Stansted. There is a National Express bus, running approximately every hour, from the airport to Cambridge, with a stop quite near the college. You will find details on the National Express website.

What is the parking situation?

Parking is in Grove Lane (see the College map). Drive down here, keeping left, and park on the grass at the bottom. As parking is limited, please park carefully to leave as much space as possible for other students. If you have a disability, you will definitely be able to park here. Depending on how many students decide to come by car, it may be possible for everyone to park here, and please let us know if you are able to offer/accept a lift from another student in your area. If you have a non-residential place, you may like to use the Park and Ride service – there are 5 of them in a circle round Cambridge; they do not offer overnight parking.

What happens if I need to cancel my place later on as a result of unforeseen circumstances?

If you cancel a fortnight or more before the weekend, your payment can be returned. After this time, we are committed to paying Peterhouse for accommodation, meals etc. so unfortunately will not be able to reimburse you.
